Veterans Could Receive More Than $120,000 With VA Housing Grants in September 2025

For veterans living with service-connected disabilities, the home should be a place of safety and independence, but sometimes, major modifications are needed to make that possible.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides housing grants that help cover the cost of adapting or even building a home to meet these needs.

How Much Can Veterans Receive in 2025?

The VA offers several grant options, each designed for different levels of disability and housing requirements:

  • Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant: Up to $121,812 in 2025. This is the largest housing benefit available and supports veterans with serious disabilities such as the loss of two or more limbs, blindness, or severe burns. The grant may be used up to six times in a veteran’s lifetime.

  • Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) Grant: Up to $24,405. Intended for veterans needing modifications due to conditions such as the loss of both hands or certain respiratory injuries. The grant can be applied to a home the veteran or a family member owns.

  • Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) Grant: Up to $49,062 for SAH-eligible veterans, or $8,760 for those qualifying under SHA. This option helps veterans living temporarily in a relative’s home.

Who Qualifies?

Eligibility is based on service-connected disabilities recognized by the VA, such as:

  • Amputation or loss of limbs.

  • Blindness or severe visual impairment.

  • Severe burn injuries.

  • Certain respiratory conditions.

Applicants must also own or plan to own a home (or, in the case of SHA, live in a home owned by a relative).

Once an application is submitted, the VA assigns a Specially Adapted Housing Agent to guide veterans through the process.
